Asylum procedure in Germany is subject to the competence of the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (Bundesamt für Migration und Flüchtlinge, BAMF).
The head office of BAMF is Nuremberg, however, the agency is decentralized, i.e. there are branch offices in all federal states. The branch offices carry out asylum procedures. This way it is also ensured that in every federal state there is at least one branch office that is in direct touch with all social agents of the integration work.
The decision on an application of asylum is made after a hearing of the applicant as well as after an extensive verification by the BAMF.
The applicant is assigned to a municipality until a final decision on the motion is taken. The aliens registration authority of this municipality extends the temporary permission to stay each time. Yet, there is no right to be assigned to a specific municipality.
